The Three Aims of Mathematics

1. Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

What does this mean?

‘To fluently recall and apply a range of mathematical skills, showing a deep understanding’

2. Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.

What does this mean?

‘To confidently prove the reason using logic, clear explanations and the correct mathematical language’

3. Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

What does this mean?

The purpose of this book is to identify the words and phrases that children need to understand and use if they are to make good progress in mathematics. It is designed to support the National Numeracy Strategy alongside the Framework for Teaching Mathematics. This booklet will be of particular interest to you if you are a parent or other adult supporting children in class or at home.


Our Aims in Teaching Mathematics:

At Golborne Community Primary School, we aim to cultivate a love, enjoyment and enthusiasm for mathematics.  We firmly believe every child will make outstanding progress in Maths, during their time at school.

In its wider context we aim to:

Foster an awareness of the need for mathematics in the real world.

Allow opportunities for children to apply mathematics appropriately.

Develop an atmosphere in which children feel confident to question.

Develop independence of thought.

Pursue investigational lines of enquiry.

Increase the awareness of appropriate mathematical language.

Equip children with specific mathematical skills, relevant to everyday living.

Develop logical thinking.

How we work to achieve these aims.

 It is based on the rationale that all children should receive their full entitlement to a mathematics curriculum that is broadly balanced and which develops progressively throughout their school life. It will provide a sound foundation for future learning in mathematics and be of use in their future life.

To do this we must develop skills, concepts and attitudes in mathematics and also teach Mathematics knowledge.

In Mathematics lessons, there will be:

  • A dedicated mathematics session every day which promote ‘The Three Aims’;
  • Direct teaching and interactive mental arithmetic session with the whole class and groups;
  • Opportunities to use models and images to support learning.
  • A dedicated time tables and mental arithmetic slot to begin every mathematics;
  • An increased emphasis on using and applying problem solving to ‘real-life’ situations;
  • Promotion of mathematical vocabulary and reasoning;
  • A mathematics skill checks to completed weekly.

We teach mathematical methods and strategies through school following an agreed progression of written methods of calculation.
